Alright, I'm usually not one to go about blathering about this show and that all over the internet. You guys know me. As the light guy, I get the opportunity to see more PGroove shows than most. But IMHO, last night's show was a landmark musical night for PGroove. Tim and I stayed up all night and listened to the recordings. My suspicions were confirmed: sick sick show. This is a seriously unique night folks. And you'll see the setlist illustrates this pretty good. Notice no Grean Teas, no Playgrounds, no Teakwoods, and Three Weeks was just the impromptu encore! I'm very hungover still, so I'm just gonna get into it and provide footnotes: Perpetual Groove 7-26-2002 J.J. Cagney's Savannah, GA SET 1 Jam > Decepticon Structure (1) Crowded Tub > (2) TTFPJ > Crowded Tub Astro Monkey (3) SET 2 Robot Waltz Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes (4) Thinkin Those Thoughts > (5) Cruisin > Super Mario Bros Theme Do Your Thing > (6) Perehelion Sweet Oblivious Antidote disc 3 Bobblehead Funk > (7) Sledgehammer Luthien and Beren (8) Walking In Place (9) La Casa Bien (10) Sweater Song (11) E: Three Weeks (12) Footnotes and review: 1. The pre jam here is a really cool groove and makes alot of twists and turns before slipping into Decepticon, which has been getting more and more rare these days. A very welcome return and a sign of things to come. 2. Okay this jam is just nuts. Very cool execution. The big news? A surprise lyrical twist in TTFPJ! Did you catch it? All I'm gonna say is, it's a reference to Freddie and Sara M Gellar. Very funny. 3. Finally! The return of Astro Monkey! One of my favorite PGroove songs. I've been begn' em to give it another shot. Execution was a little shakey, but this could turn into one of those epic tunes. Hopefully it'll stick around. 4. Room was very packed by the second set. Robot was solid and the Diamonds wasn't planned in the band setlist, but was dedicated to someone. Fun stuff. 5. Alright heres the show highlight! Thinkin! CRUISIN! and a totally unplanned foray into Super Mario! Matt on accordian during Thinkin! The loooong anticipated return of Cruisin was just on fire! They were going at full bore pedal to the metal when they swung into it and it NEVER SLOWED DOWN. It's Cruisin as I've never heard it. Then Super Mario just comes out of nowhere. It features a wicked techno Groove in the second part while Brock plays the melody. Plus a funny little rap by Brock about "100 gold coins yo" and "the mushroom". This whole segue jam alone is worth the price of admission. 6. A rare cover played AMAZINGLY! The jam just frickin rocks with some great slide work by Brock. Then it morphs very neatly into a super cool Perehelion. I want to make a note right here about the nature of the sounds in general all night- A. Matt is just rippin the Hammond all night long, seriously RIPPIN it. I'm surprised it didn't combust. B. Brock was gettin some SICK feedback tones out of the new hollowbody. I mean sustain for days type of shit. You know what I'm talkin about? When it sounds like it's on the edge of control, like some wild steed or somethin? It was that sound, most of the night! 7. A totally reworked Bobblehead. You'll probably never hear one quite like this again. Probably my favorite new tune, cause it's comletely different every time! This one is very dense and crazy and trippy. This jam just goes and never looks back once. It's starts to wind down, then SLAM! Sledgehammer. The room's pretty crazy at this point. Brock perfectly chirps "It's a classic" while singing the "Sledge"'s. Funny stuff. 8. The crowds pretty wound up. At this point Brock starts rambling on about the crowd sounds at Bonaroo before launching into...Luthien and Beren! Another forgotten tune, back with a vengence. More great slide work in this tune. And of course Matt really shines in this song. 9. The Walking should be called Talking In Place (like the board) Some hilarious banter here. With the Reverend Chopin Brockely giving a sermon throughout. "I'm talkin about love girl!" 10. Band intros all around after Walking peaks out and then a beautiful Casa with a 4 minute bass solo by Adam that's just amazing as usual. This is a real standout Casa. 11. Okay, the place went apeshit here. SWEATER SONG! by Weezer. Last time played? Who the fuck knows? What else can I say? Oh yeah, how about this- Brock does a guitar solo behind his head Hendrix style! 12. So the bands setlist shows Sweater Song as an encore, but the crowd just wouldn't let them leave the stage so- the perennial PGroove classic: Three Weeks. Seriously apeshit crowd when the first guitar notes come in. Seriously apeshit when the last notes go out. What a perfect way to cap off such an eclectic show. What a night! CD's WILL be forth coming. I promise. show. What a night! CD's WILL be forth coming. I promise.
